To discuss a Weekend Update: More authentic than Taco Bell, less authentic than getting Hepatitis from the water

Hola, ¿que tal?
There was a decidedly Mexican flavor to my weekend. It tasted like tacos, smelled like fried ice cream and sounded like a mariachi band.

Capricorn and I have a new favorite restaurant: El Rodeo...
It inspired us to declare our mutual day off on Friday, "Feliz Navidad 2008." It will be full of Christmas decorating (she's dying to start decorating this year, and I won't Scrooge that up), margaritas, enchiladas and possibly watching Home Alone with Spanish subtitles.

Now, it's time for the Weekend Update, which, as always, is mostly context-free:

Things I heard:
  • Guitars, an accordion and loud Mexican singing: At El Rodeo, a local restaurant nestled between a gas station and an Amish furniture store and across the street from a Hooters, authenticity is a prerequisite to fun. What better way to create a Mexican atmosphere than having a mariachi band serenade patrons with traditional songs like "Yesterday" by the Beatles* and "Happy Birthday"? Needless to say, Capricorn and I were excited. This band was so authentic, the lead singer didn't even answer calls in his bluetooth headset while singing.
  • Gunshots: From the new James Bond flick, "Quantum of Solace," which I hope to have a review for soon. There's a lot of killing going on this time... it was bloody fantastic. Capricorn had never seen a James Bond movie before (gasp!), and she really enjoyed it... much, much more than "Quarantine."**
Things I saw:
  • My brother hitting on two girls sitting in their car at Arby's: My brother, not Mystery, is The Pick-up Artist. He saw two cute girls looking over at our car, so he strutted over and talked to them. On a related note, we are fairly certain the girls are in high school. It happens... so does prison.
  • Pick-up trucks the size of my apartment taking up two parking spots at a crowded restaurant on Saturday: I hate that. So does Capricorn. She left a note saying as much under the guy's windshield. Bonus points for Capricorn.
  • My football fantasy team, 100, other guy, 78. I'm 9-2, baby, and am one step closer to getting my full-fledged fantasy nerd card.
Things I tasted:
  • Excellent tacos, and even better fried ice cream: I still am not sure how they fry ice cream, but I don't question the results.
-----------
* Good catch, AmyXXOO. In a rush, I had it spelled Beetles and the crappy spell checker is not pop-culture savvy. I apologize.
** Yes, I'm still haunted by that movie. No, I don't intend on ending my references to it anytime soon. Yes, I still would like to hear from anyone else who has seen it.

Completely random comment from FunnyGal KAT (although it has to do with "Feliz Navidad" so maybe not so random)...

My favorite version of "Feliz Navidad" EVER was sung by some guy in a T station in Boston and because of his heavy accent sounded like: "I wanna witchu a merry Chrismah, I wanna witchu a merry Chrismah, I wanna witchu a merry Chrismah from the bottom of muh heart." I still sing it that way whenever it comes on the radio!

I'm looking forward to your Bond movie review; I'm still having nightmares about Quarantine and that is based on your review alone. P.S. The Jesus Facebook video was a classic!

Nothing beats the Sean Connery 007 movies. I love those scenes when he doesn't have a shirt on and his pants come up to his man boobs. So amazing

On an unrelated note, I've been known to leave scathing notes under wipers when I do not approve of parking skills. I've also been known to blow kisses while passing people who are flicking me off...ahhh, they get so pissed off about that. Anyway, total bonus points for the girlfriend, I totally approve :)

I like your weekend updates context-free, it makes for a good overview! And Capricorn is awesome for leaving a note...I would never have thought to do that!

My boyfriend and I have a date spot that sounds very similar to your Mexican/mariachi place. It is located next to a laudromat and a liquor store. It is right across the street from a morgue. Damn, they make amazing enchiladas though, and their margaritas are teacher-proof (erase bad days). You made me miss it.

Wait - am I the only one who noticed that you misspelt " Beatles " ?

You're all breaking my heart here people....

I love mexican food... except for the time I got sick at Chi-Chi's.

I still have nightmares about Hostel and that was like 2 or 3 years ago.

one year after the fireworks at springettsbury park, we saw a car parked in the middle of four spaces at the galleria mall. it was extraordinarily packed in the lot due to the fourth of july celebration. hannah really wanted to leave them a note, but i was too afraid of what words she might have used. still, it was ridiculous.

The more you write in references to Quarantine, the more I actually want to see it. And I don't typically like those kinds of movies.

So how authentic WAS the Mexican food?

i'm 9-2 as well...2 points shy of 1100 points on the season.

Warner+Boldin+Maurice Jones-Drew...I got the three best at their respective positions. Brandon Jacobs, Eddie Royal, and Chicago's defense ain't hurtin' me either.

I'm on my way to my first win in 5 years in the same league. And I think this year was the time my draft got criticized the most. Of course, I've made 29 moves to the free agent pool.

And you brought up "Quarantine" again... I'm starting to wonder about you. You warned us not to see it but yet you keep bringing it up. Which is making me think maybe I should see it just to see what all the talk is about.

Well, Mexican food in York, huh?
Makes me wonder what it's actually like. I'm sure it's got to be good if it has mariachis.
Angel and I actually drive 15 minutes south and cross the border to Mexico to have those teeny tiny tacos from the little stands on the streets of Mexico. The upside...at least there are no stray dogs running around begging for our food. The tacos are delish!!

I hope to see Quarantine and I hope it scares the crap out of me instead of boring the tears out of me.
I have home made parking tickets for cars like that. They read:
'I hope you dont screw like you park you'll never get it in'
I love handing those things out!
