To discuss a guest post: Children of the 90s examines children born in the 90s

First off, let me say there is no Teen Mom post today. My laptop had a meltdown, possibly because it hates Farrah, or just because it's several years old, which is 654 years old in computer years. I'll do one as soon as I get a working laptop.

Now, on to the good stuff. My birthday is Saturday (which you had marked down, obvs), so to celebrate, I'm going to heaven with 72 virgins have three guest posters fill out the next few days.

I was born in '83 and am turning 27, which is either really old or really young, depending on what year you were born. I know it always creeps me out when I think of people born in the 1990s, for example. And what better blogger to write about the 90s than Children of the 90s, who, if you haven't checked out her blog yet, has some of the most detailed, fun, and nostalgic looks at the decade of yester...er...decade around. She even just hit 500 followers. So check out this great post, then go follow her. Not literally, cause that's weird. I mean blog-wise.

Think You're Too Young to Feel Old? Think again.

Hello WildARDChasers! Children of the 90s here. When Andy asked me to write a guest post in honor of the impending anniversary of his birth, I was pretty excited. After all, we've been blog pals since way back when and I always think his posts are hilarious. I don't usually do this sort of thing, but it seems that now's as good a time as any to give back to the blogging community with a creative guest post. I use the term "creative" lightly, as technically Andy came up with this clever idea. But since he's so modest, I will graciously accept the credit for it. Thanks, Andy.

Being in your twenties in a strange phenomenon. In this world of extended adolescence, many of us still act like we're still coasting on the edge of our teenage years. We don't feel older. That is, until our friends start talking at dinner parties about mortgages and tax credits and car insurance rates and all sorts of other topics that feel distinctly adult. Not in the fun XXX adult way, but in the boring, dry "Am I turning into my parents?" adult kind of way.

We're still young, of course. I'm not implying we need to buckle down and behave soberly and responsibly quite yet. But sometimes you just get that distinct feeling that our time basking in the glorious carefree sun of youth is drawing to a close. The teen idols of our day are settling down, getting married, popping out lucratively photogenic babies. An entirely new generation of young stars are commanding the spotlight and they have a unique talent of making the rest of us still-young 20-somethings feel ancient. You know, like subjects worthy of exploration by the ever-wise Olmec on Legends of the Hidden Temple. Even that reference going over the respective heads of these up-and-coming pretty young things is enough to make us feel practically retirement home-bound.

Just in case you're thinking you're too young to start feeling old, here's a surefire trick: consider that some of today's top-earning celebrities were born in the 90s. That's right. While we were out there frolicking with our Big Wheels and Skip Its, these kids were enjoying the well-insulated fetal chamber of the womb.

Here are just a few of these kidlets out there making more money this year than we'll probably see in a lifetime:

Kristen Stewart (born April 9, 1990)

I'm not much of a Twihard myself, but from what I've heard around the interwebs is that this girl is going to be rolling in it. At the tender age of 19, she's rumored to be making somewhere in the vicinity of eight figures on the upcoming films. Let me say that one more time for you, just in case you missed it. Eight figures. I'm five years older than her and barely making my rent payments. Hurts, doesn't it?

Soulja Boy (born July 28, 1990)

When his 2007 single"Crank That (Soulja Boy)" hit number one, this kid was the youngest ever to produce, write, and perform his own number one single. I was going to say "sing", but that wouldn't be the proper verbage for his work, would it? Anyway, if you've got time to come up with some sort of widespread dance move phenomenon, there may still be time for you to catch up. Good luck.

Jamie Lynn Spears (born April 4, 1991)

You know we're in trouble when a kid born in the 90s already has a kid of her own. Really, though, the joke is probably on us. OK! paid $1 million for photos of lil' Spears and her newborn daughter, Maddie.

Miley Cyrus (born November 23, 1992)

Damn you, Miley, and your incredibly catchy pop music offerings. I'd love to hate you for eclipsing any of my greatest financial dreams before you were old enough to drive, but I can't get that damn "See You Again" and "Party in the USA" out of my head long enough to consider it.

Taylor Momsen (born July 26, 1993)

Here's an old Hollywood trick. How do you take a fresh-faced 16-year old and make her look like a tired 35-year old after a long night of barfly-ing? I think the smudgy eye makeup is definitely a factor. Anyway, you could always just check with Ali Lohan for more tips.

Nick Jonas (born September 16, 1992)

A religious, upstanding trio of brothers with questionable taste in hairstyling? This one's got Hanson written all over it. Luckily, today's teens aren't old enough to remember Hanson, so they're content to settle with these knockoffs. I want to say Nick is the cute one, but I don't want to implicate myself in anything statutory here, so we'll just say if I were 10 years younger I'd be wont to plaster my bedroom walls with his J-14 centerfolds.

Shawn Johnson (born January 19, 1992)

A gold medal and a Dancing With the Stars victory? You're really making the rest of us here, look like slackers. I thought I was doing okay if I can get down to the gym for a half an hour or so three times a week.

Taylor Lautner (born February 11, 1992)

Heck, this kid played a Mouseketeer in 2004 on The Nick and Jessica Variety Hour. I can guarantee none of his peers would even have the vaguest recollection of that show's existence, but it's got to make the rest of us feel old. And a little dirty for admiring his shirtless Situation in New Moon.

Dakota Fanning (born February 23, 1994
)
As one of the youngest on this list, she's probably accomplished more than we can expect by twice her age, but it's hard not to like her. She even played the child version of Ally McBeal in a flashback scene. That's pretty much the only reason she'd even know who Ally McBeal was, and she was just 5 at the time.

Justin Bieber (born March 1, 1994)
It's more than a little disturbing to hear a 15-year old kid crooning on the radio about "One Less Lonely Girl." What's he going to do to hook her? Take her for milkshakes? Have his mom drive them to a movie? When I first heard the song, I thought its singer was the aforementioned One Less Lonely Girl. We'll see what happens to his career when puberty sets in.

Of course, if it makes you feel any better, most of the actors who actually play teenagers on TV are closer to 30 than 15. In fact, many of them might be older than you. By Hollywood's calculation, that means you've got at least a few more good years of youth before you'd have to start playing the parent or the teacher in a sitcom. It's a small consolation, but as the years fly by we're going to settle for taking what we can get. Happy Birthday, Andy!

To discuss a DirecT(v) Swing and a Miss

The mint mask-covered face sums up several things:
1) I was surprised by what happened to me Sunday
2) I had time to do a facial, when I thought I would be busy with TV stuff
3) I'm losing my heterosexual credibility, but I swear, it was just one time because I was bored.

Last week, we all talked about whether I should dump my Comcast cable TV service, and get DirecTV, which would save me some money, get me HD, and screw over the evil cable company, but would also be a hassle and lock me into a two-year contract.

I weighed the pros and cons you all laid out. I did hours of my own research -- and I mean hours, too. I get hardcore into researching and debating major decisions, not unlike a psychotic person.

I decided to switch to DirecTV.

It almost didn't happen. Saturday night, I found out I had a 1-year contract with my Tivo DVR service, even though I was paying month-to-month after a previous contract ran out. That was going to make things more complicated, since I was getting a free HD DVR from DirecTV, but, sure, what the heck, let's stick with the plan.

Here's what happened Sunday:

7:55 A.M. DirecTV Dude calls to say he's almost there. I'm half-asleep and amazed that the 8 a.m.-12 p.m. window actually included arriving around 8, not the 3 p.m. you come to expect.
8:05 a.m. DirecTV Dude walks through my apartment to the back porch area, where, by my rental agreement, the dish needs to go.
8:05:30 a.m. Seconds later, after pointing his doo-hicky, he says there is no line of sight to the Southern sky or the Goddess of Rain or some business. The guy living on the second floor above me has DirecTV, but his dish points over the roof. Mine could only point at the building, basically. And with limited options allowed by my rental company, there was no other place to put the dish.
8:06 a.m. DirecTV Dude says, "So, I guess you're staying with cable."
8:07 a.m. I close the door on the dude, and look over to my right. That's where there is a mess of wires and a gaping hole where my Tivo and cable box were Saturday night, until I spent 20 minutes unhooking everything.
8:10 a.m. Call Capricorn. She later tells me she felt terrible for me because I sounded like someone kicked my puppy. My high-definition puppy.
10:30 a.m. Go to Best Buy just to look at the HDTVs they have hooked up. Consider stabbing a TV with a knife. Think better of it. Stab an employee in the face instead. Geek Squad scurries to stop the bleeding.
11:00 a.m. Spend the next couple of hours putting back together everything I had taken apart in two rooms. Considering I'm a bit of an A/V guy and I have a Tivo, audio/video receiver, the cable box and a bunch of speakers, there are more wires than in Lady Gaga's red carpet Grammy dress.
2 p.m. Exfoliated
3 p.m. Fortunately, I hadn't canceled Comcast just yet. I call them and say I'm, uh, having DirecTV come over later this week and this is their last chance to keep me (essentially, Comcast had become my back-up prom date). They respond by giving me 80 extra channels and faster Internet for the next 6 months for about $30 a month less than what I already pay for a lower package. After that, I can just go back to the lower package to avoid a major rate increase.

So after all of that, I'm back with cable. All considering, I still saved money, and better appreciated what I already have. I just feel bad about the guy I stabbed.
------------------------
Heads up for later this week: I've got a few guest posters lined up to help celebrate my birthday, which is on Saturday, although it is celebrated as a federal holiday on the following Monday (schools and post offices will be closed). I think you'll love what they've written. There's not a Jersey Shore reference or a terrible Anne Frank joke in them, so we're already doing better than most of my stuff.

One other thing: I'm trying to be better about responding to comments by e-mail, so if you want to hear back from me, include your e-mail address when you comment.

Otherwise, to track you down I have to resort to climbing up the tree near your window and watching you get ready in the morning. Oh, and don't wear that striped shirt. No, the one in your left hand.

To discuss Grammy award commentary 2010

Elton John Lady Gaga Grammys 2010After the disappointing day I had with TV (to be discussed tomorrow), I almost forgot the Grammys were on. But Capricorn and I caught them in time, and, as is now tradition, offer you some Grammy commentary. We're already off to a good start tonight, because Chris Brown wasn't arrested just before the show.
  • Lady Gaga opens the show in a sparkly green outfit, with what appears to be the the first-ever case of pubic cleavage.
  • Elton John and Lady Gaga sharing the same stage was memorable, but they looked like they just emerged from a coal mine that uses a drag queen to signal danger instead of a canary.
  • Russell Brandt looks like a terroristic wolfman.
  • Jennifer Lopez emerges in a skin-tight white dress. Actually, she's emerging all over that dress. "She forgot her spanx!"- Capricorn.
  • Simon Baker is Brittish? Ed. note: My international readers point out he's Australian. That makes a little more sense, with that hair and tan.
  • Beyonce is singing "You Oughta Know. Does this mean she slept with Dave Coulier too?!?!?!
  • I get the sense Beyonce dries her hair in the morning by grinding on the floor and thrashing around like Tawny Kitaen.
  • Pink trapeze Grammys 2010Capricorn: "Does Pink have on her trapeze outfit? I've seen this before." No, she wouldn't do that again, I reply. Oops.
  • What do I have to do to GET AWAY FROM MILEY?!?!
  • The Black Eyed Peas looks like the dominatrix version of the Blue Man Group. Ladies and gentlemen, one of the biggest selling groups of the past decade! Let's not forget their dancer outfits, which appear to be made out of cardboard, spray paint and fail.
  • You're playing off Stephen Colbert during his acceptance speech? Really?
  • Jamie Foxx, I ain't hating on you for that opera fake-out- it was funny. Or T-Pain busting out as the conductor. I am a little concerned about the 15-year-old girls in the pit singing along to "Blame It on the Alcohol." Actually, they were doing more singing than T-Pain or Jamie Foxx combined (as Jaimee Foxx said himself, "I'm sorry for the autotune, Jay-Z). Capricorn is impressed Slash came on to play. I'm impressed they were all sober enough to perform.
  • I think that was Katy Perry presenting, but there was no cleavage to identify her. Maybe she was scared Russell would transform if he saw full moons.
  • So what happens when Taylor Swift likes a guy that likes her back? Does she run out of song material? ... It was cool Taylor and Stevie Nicks were both singing "You Belong to Me," but I don't think Stevie was ever "on the bleachers." Under the bleachers, maybe. Casting spells, possibly.
  • I thought my TV was broken. Nope, it's Celine Dion in 3D. I'd prefer my Celine in 1D. Or No-D. And was Usher singing "What about the elephants?" If they would've saved the money they spent on the 3D technology, they could have saved the kids, the rainforests and the freaking elephants. Nice Michael Jackson tribute, though. I still think he's living with Tupac and Biggie somewhere, secretly making albums.
  • Jay-Z Beyonce Solange's son Grammys 2010Based on a fan vote, Bon Jovi has to do Livin on a Prayer. I wish we could done that for Beyonce. I would have chosen "Bills, Bills, Bills" and her her sing it with the original Destiny's Child members. Except she would have to guess who is an original member and who was just a random girl chosen from the audience.
  • Who knew Jay-Z laughs like Fran Drescher?
  • I think Mary J. Blige's face might explode trying to keep up with Andrea Bocelli.
  • Adam Sandler presents Dave Matthews Band: Can I have "People who Reached Their Peak in 1996" Alex? Speaking of the 90s, Ricky Martin!
  • After seeing Roberta Flack, it's weird to think that years from now, I'll watch the Grammys with my kids, and say, "Look, that's Beyonce singing 'Single Ladies,' her old hit. She used to be the biggest star in the world. And you're in for a treat kids. She's still using her famous boob tape! .... It used to look better, kids. Don't be scared."
  • Oh man, Drake, Wayne and Eminem are doing "Forever"! I like this song a little too much for a suburban white kid. Oh, phew. Taylor Swift knows the words, too. I'm safe.
  • CBS, if you're going to have rappers perform, don't censor half the song to cover for a random swear word. That's like blurring out an entire episode of "Jersey Shore" on the off chance J-Woww shows too much cleavage. You know its going to happen, so prepare in advance.
  • It's to the point with Lady Gaga's outfits that you have to treat her like a poorly-behaving child. Give it too much attention (At the end, she looked like a frozen Rocksteady from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), and she'll just keep doing it. So, uh, "Hey Lady Gaga, you look perfectly average. Just as ordinary as can be."
  • Lady Gaga gave an "Oh, of course she won" face when Taylor Swift won record of the year. That's what happens when you win so many Grammys, though. Even Carlos Santana was jealous, and he won about 45 for writing that song that's played in waiting rooms around the country.
