To discuss 50 (more) things about me

There have been some new readers in recent weeks, even as I've had to slow down blogging a bit. For them, and for people who have been reading for months but only because their browser is frozen and they can't get the hell out of here, I offer you 50 Things About Me. Consider it a follow-up to the 100 Things About Me post I did in November 2008 as part of "Get to Know Me" week, although much has changed since then.

1. I recently started introducing myself as Andrew instead of Andy
2. It's to make me sound more mature and older.
3. Actually, why aren't I introducing myself as "Zeus"?
4. In the past 8 years, I have been in two relationships that lasted a combined 6 years.
5. Good God.
6. I now live alone with my chiweenie, Bailey
7. Bailey has never paid rent or paid me back for his medical bills, as he is holding out hope Obama's health care plan eventually will extend to toy dogs.
8. Last time I did this 100 Things list, I thought Natalie Portman, Lacey Chabert and Helen Hunt were some of the prettiest actresses around. Still are.
9. But I'd like to add Emmanuelle Chriqui and Kate Beckinsale to that list.
10. Not Megan Fox. She's the girl in high school that knew she was hot and flirted with the geeks to get them to do stuff for her.
11. I was a geek.
12. Am.
13. Was.
14. Fine, am. Happy?
15. Speaking of which, I still do musicals, even though logic would say it's not smart to do a full-time job and a show at the same time.
16. But when you love to perform in front of people and are not currently a stripper, your options are limited.
17. So I'm doing a two-month run of "1776," followed by a two-month run of "Music Man," followed by a two-month run of "Sleep Deprivation."
18. At some point, I've promised myself I'd do at least one open mic night at a comedy club.
19. I have no idea how to do stand-up comedy, but I am often standing up when telling jokes, so that must be a head start.
20. I have a feeling that I'd either do fantastic at stand-up comedy, or bomb horrifically, with no middle ground.
21. But if I bomb, I'd just strip naked, as everything is funnier naked when you're a guy.
22. The male body is very funny looking, really. God gave women all the good parts.
23. Hence the reason there aren't male models in the Victoria's Secret fashion show.
24. Although I have a fierce walk from watching tons of "Top Model" and would probably do well.
25. ... that was the gayest thing I've said in some time.
26. I recently won a statewide award for journalism
27. I recently won a merit award at work
28. But let's be honest. My Participation Ribbon at my Boy Scouts Pinewood Derby in third grade is what needs to be included in my obituary.
29. I hope the Boy Scouts have since become more environmentally friendly and made their derby cars hybrid models.
30. I have both a clear idea and no clue whatsoever what I'll be doing at this point in five years.
31. I think that comes with being 27.
32. When life expectency was, say, 50 in the 1600s, did 14-year-old boys worry about their 401k's, too?
33. Did 20-year-old boys hit on 13-year-old girls because the 14-year-old girls were too old? How did that work?
34. What did those same people in the 1600s do to pass the time when they were waiting in line for something? They couldn't check their Facebook page, text or Google anything. But their cell phone bills must have been so cheap. It evens out, I suppose.
35. These are the thoughts I have on an almost daily basis.
36. At some point, I will give "Glee" another try. Not yet, though.
37. But if I do, then you need to give one of the following a try: "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"; "Treme"; or "Modern Family." Deal?
38. Shows that have jumped the shark: "American Idol"; "Real Housewives of NYC and of OC"; "The Office" (somewhat); "Real World"
39. When Christina Aguilera was preparing for her MTV Movie Awards performance, who on her crew said, "You know what this performance is missing? A glow heart on her vagina."?
40. Did Jennifer Love Hewitt see Christina's light-up hoo-hoo, look down at her own vajazzled ladypart, and think, "What's a girl gotta do to keep her private parts up on the trends these days?"
41. These are other thoughts I have on an almost daily basis.
42. I believe God designed men and women. But what was the purpose of making us have to use the bathroom all the time? He couldn't have invented a more time-efficient method?
43. Things I do every day: Snack. Check my e-mail. Read about Pittsburgh sports teams. Think about something sexual at an inappropriate moment and then reassure myself it's only natural. Sing. Walk my dog.
44. At no point during the pet adoption process do they tell you that you will become intimately involved with the mannerisms of your dog's sphincter as a method of forecasting bowel movements. But it's true.
45. Oops, did I kill the mood?
46. You know what's a good reality show that VH1 should bring back? The Pickup Artist.
47. I wish I got outraged more. It's hard to get a good rage going about anything, even if there are oil spills, shootings and bombings all the time.
48. I do get outraged at, say, the cable company, but I am worried that's not what people mean when they ask for outrage at social injustices.
49. Even when I don't get to post all the time, I still love that you guys keep coming back.
50. But please let me know if my blog jumps the shark ... Actually, don't. Sharks are awesome.

Now please do your own list, so I can catch up with what you've doing.
I'll link you here. Pinky swear.
Natballs put hers up. Gold star for you, Natballs. Just don't get her started on "True Blood."
Spleeness did a mini-15 things list, and it includes things you may never want to know.
Awesome things. Here it is.
SamIAm, my former college classmate, did a 50 Things list, too.

To discuss oddities about me that might make you appear more normal

A little more about me, for Get to Know Me week (as if you didn't know enough already).

Odd things about me:
  • I can't stand peas or beans. But, even more, I can't tolerate bananas (the fruit, not artificial flavoring). Bananas make me gag. Literally.
  • When moving around in the shower, I only turn counter-clockwise, and I have no idea why.
  • I am not scared of any animals/insects- I won't not do something out of fear of some bug or critter. But I am scared of shark attacks-- and I live in Pennsylvania... and love sharks.
  • When I'm interested in a new hobby/possible purchase, I will research it ad nauseum, for days on end.
  • I have trouble remembering people's names, but wonder why they can't remember mine.
  • I don't like gum.
  • If I unintentionally form a habit of doing something- the order I get ready in morning, for example- I'll get self-conscious about it and continue to do it out of superstition, even if I don't really believe in superstition.
  • When I perform for theater/live shows, I sing the same song right before I go on, every time (theater, on the other hand, is built on superstition)- Ella Fitzgerald's "Our Love is Here to Stay." I also make sure my fly isn't down, even if I'm wearing tights.
  • I'm ambidextrous, but only in some things- I write right-handed (because that's how I was taught). I shoot a basketball and throw a football left-handed. I bat and throw a baseball right-handed. I eat some foods left-handed.
  • I can't roll my R's.
  • I have a double-jointed middle finger.
  • I have an indentation in my chest on the breastbone area (always have)
What about you?

To discuss the re-telling of a sad story

Wow, this was a quick week. Get to Know Me Week, which I think was wildly successful, is almost over. I've been updating the post with the links to your submissions, so check back there to see the new stuff.
There will be a Thanksgiving Update soon (How was yours? What did you eat? Did your family get in any fistfights?), as well as one more Get to Know Me-style post... But first, as promised, I'm re-posting one of my earliest blog entries (early being three months ago). I think this was the post that first had me thinking, "Yeah, I can stick to the blog thing." It's a post I refer to often, so it might be worth your while to read it...

The Little Debbie Story
"No, it can't be," I thought as I stared at the two quarters and eight dimes in the palm of my hand.
I looked back at the Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pie on the shelf. "Little Debbie, you price gouging piece of..."

Let me take you back to what happened leading up to this ominous, heartwrenching retail experience with America's Favorite Snack Cake.

As a 25-year-old working professional living on his own, I've come to grips with the fact that it will be a long, long time before I can afford, say, a decent-sized house, on my own. Any of you who are recently out of college probably feel the same, unless you are working in Big Business, and then you sold your soul anyway, so we'll call it even.
I'll never classify myself as poor, because there are actual poor people out there who can't afford to feed their kids or go see a doctor. So understand that- this isn't the same...
But there definitely is a subcategory of life, mostly for people in their 20s, I'd think, that is all about the struggle. You pay your bills, hopefully often, and you can afford some things in life, but you never feel like you're getting anywhere, right? You probably worry about money, say, I don't know, all the freakin time?

Ok, so that's the context. Back to this morning. After a slew of some unexpected and expected bills-- paying to register your car and get its annual inspection is a forced tax, don't you think?-- I had been tiptoeing the past few days. My rent check was turned in a few days ago. My pay day is Wednesday. I had enough to cover it as of Monday night, but by Tuesday morning, I dipped about 25 bucks below what the rent is.
No problem, I figured. As long as they don't cash the check by oh my God they cashed the check today... Negative 23 bucks in the hole. Triumphantly with my chest and chin held high, and my full trenchcoat and sunglasses on, I went to the bank to use an old bank account debit card I hadn't used in a year or so to get the 25 bucks remaining in it, and transferred it to the new account. A nice humbling experience- the teller makes the deposit and eyeballs your account balance as he hands you the receipt: $2.27. Nice!
Now since I hadn't bought groceries in a while because of said cash flow, I didn't have much with me at work to eat other than a basic lunch. By afternoon, I've got a sugar itch and want to pick up a snack.
With absolutely no paper money left, I rummage in my car for what's left of my spare change. I go to the store, get an iced tea ($1) and eye up the sugary sensation of Little Debbie. It's 35 cents. I can't afford it.
You know you are a broke, broke man when 35 cents crushes your budget.
Fortunately, I had a hearty dinner to lift me up.
A hot dog and Ramen.
Jealous?

To discuss Get to Know Me links for you and yours

(Updated list as needed)
When I asked you all to join me in "Get to Know Me" week, I figured maybe one or two of you would join in, grudgingly, and the rest would say, "Andy, COME ON, Twilight just came out, there's no time!"

As always, I underestimate you. Even before we could get to the end of the week, I had several bloggers post their "Get to Know Me" submission. Entries are still being taken and will be added to this list, but let me just say you have a lot to live up to, as these are hilarious, intriguing, and entertaining...

The general rules are to write a post about:
A) Something nobody knows about you, or
B)
One of your favorites stories from your childhood, or
C) Your 10 Top Favorite (Fill in the Blank).

Then, let me know you did the dirty deed so I can link you all night long. Ask others to join, too.
If I don't have your link included yet, remind me; I do plan to read every single entry.

Just for joining, here are two special buttons (oh the choices!) you can add on your blog (make sure to direct people to your post).
I'd offer prizes, but I am poorer than that kid in the "Christmas Shoes" song that always makes me sad. Somebody buy that kid a pair of Manolo Blahniks already!

The Get to Know Me list so far:
  • KK at Will Work for Shoes talks about her sense of humor as a toddler.
  • KAT at Funny Gals sets up a bad joke, and then reminds us it's a sad romantic reality.
  • SJ, also at Funny Gals, decided she better join in on the fun, too, with a Top 10 list.
  • AmyXXOO at Insomniatic Musings tells a harrowing tale of a hiking experience that I won't ruin the end of, but it's freaky.
  • Southern Belle, who hosted a Q&A as part of my own GTNM posts, tells a gruesome and interesting story.
  • Sam at Yes, I know "Sam" is a boy's name, took Get to Know Me a little literally and posted photos of me from our college choir days. It's worth a visit. Trust me.
  • Sheila at Here we go... went all out and posted two entries, one on her ADD and the other on.. what was I talking about again? Look, something sparkly. Oh yeah, anyway, the other one is about being a light sleeper.
  • Joshlos at It's a Bloggyblogworld has a broken heart. Read it and feel sorry for him. Especially because of who was singing at the hospital the day he had surgery.
  • Newbie to this blog, Sara at My Checked Baggage talks about her celebrity crush and her choice of swear words.
  • Canadian Áine Caitríona at Smell the Glove offered up one of her old-school posts, a Proust Questionnaire, as a submission.
  • Soccer mom and proud of it Kisatrtle of Kisatrtle's Kreative Korner (not to be confused with the KKK) offered up 100 things about her.
  • Jenbun of The Good, the Bad, and the Lovely has 10 Favorite Things about this time of the year, plus she blog-crushes on Ben.
  • Miss Tiff of A Bit of Miss Tiff wrote her Top 10 favorite movies, including Home Alone. Nice.
  • Little Ms. Blogger at A Little Blog about Nothing gave her guilty pleasure list. Check out number 7.
  • Onewandering, who just started reading this blog, decided not to be a lurker and join in on GTNM week by listing her 10 favorite things about the holiday season. There are no mentions of Santa, elves, or turkeys.
  • JSauce at GimmeMyTiara told me she'd stop being lazy and actually write a post without the aid of alcohol, so go encourage her.
  • Updated:
  • The female version of me, Andy, of Life Isn't So Terrible After All, wrote about her favorite things about this year. Andy and I often get mistaken for the other when commenting on other blog sites. I consider it a badge of honor.
  • Erin, of The State I Am In, helped give me the idea for my 100 things list. She got her GTNM week on by doing all three ideas... Congratulate her with roses and praise.
  • Wee-h at WeeTravelings said she "couldn't resist" joining. She wrote about how discovered.. well, I'll let you find out. One phrase includes "a good suck and I was off to sleep," but she's not talking about what you think.
  • Tishtash of My Telephone Booth has a very unique take on a Top 10 list with her fave weird sounds in the office. My favorite sound on the list is the one that makes no sound.
  • Far of My Everyday Soap (Opera!) got hers up first thing Thanksgiving morning. She's dedicated.
  • Kylie of Random Thoughts by Kylie just started her blog this month, and she already is joining in, so check her out.
  • Liz of Southern FRYEd, who professes her blog crush on me (much obliged, thank you), weaves a fantastic story about crayon envy and subtraction. Keep it up, Liz.
  • Heather at Geiger Girl lists 100 things about her that involve extra toes, Playboy, pot and knees. Interested?
  • Your turn...

To discuss 100 Things About Me

43. And that's not because Zack Morris told me There's No Hope With Dope.

94. I started this blog on Aug. 1 2008, on a whim
95. I had no idea what I was doing
96. I still don't
97. Somehow, I thought it'd be smart to write all day for work, then come home and write
98. Your comments make it all worth it
99. That, and I get to post funny photos of Bailey
100. My favorite holiday is the Fourth of July, my favorite band is Radiohead and my favorite movie is either "28 Days Later," "Oceans 11," or "Once."

To discuss a Get to Know Me interview, plus Australian slang

Get to Know Me Week

Much like my guest post on Haute Pocket last Friday giving me a gateway to post morally corrupt material, Southern Belle wanted her latest Aussie dictionary post to find refuge on my site.
Southern Belle and I already have some history, after I wrote this co-blog in part because she correctly called me out for offending an entire nation. But she has stuck with me, showing me she is more wonderful than even her fun blog led me to believe. (Yes, I linked the crap out of that paragraph.)

Today, you can find her guest post below, defining an Australian slang word I had never heard of, so enjoy.

Also today, visit her site to read a Question and Answer post we wrote together that continues my Get to Know Me Week. In it, you'll find answers about my relationship with Capricorn, religious views and a random pop culture reference or two...

Thanks to all who have already volunteered and/or already posted their prompt for Get to Know Me week. If you missed it, check here. I'm posting everyone's links at the end of the week!
-------------
Southern Belle:

root:

1.noun
A part of the body of a plant that develops, typically, from the radicle and grows downward into the soil, anchoring the plant and absorbing nutriment and moisture.

2.verb (idiom)
To have sexual intercourse with, as in: "Hey Kylie! Shane said he wants to root ya."

3. noun
An individual with whom sexual intercourse is
performed.
Often used in the context of describing the quality of said performance, as in: "Shane is a dud (terrible) root" or "Kylie is a top (very good) root!"

Additional:

root dreads
noun
Matted hair, similar to dreadlocks, at the back of a woman's head. Caused by repetitive movement against a surface (usually a pillow) during sexual intercourse.

To discuss a high school tale of intrigue and suspense

"Get to Know Me Week"

Today's "Get to Know Me" entry is a retelling of a high school tale...

Most people in high school have that one person you do everything with, from hanging out to playing sports to going on late-night escapades.
Mine was a guy we'll call DH. We played basketball together, went to amusement parks together, went to diners at 3 a.m., chased after girls, dabbled in black tar heroin, you know, the usual.

We also often would see what kind of trouble we could get into, as we grew up in a very small town with very little to do. At certain times, this included attempted cow-tipping (we never got one pushed over, as the cows started stampeding), driving through a blizzard to pick up two cheerleaders (nearly died but it was worth it) and watching his pet piranha try to eat a lake trout in DH's aquarium (it seems we liked abusing animals, but we didn't.)

One summer night, before our senior year, DH wanted to check out the house of some guy he thought was doing shady stuff. I never quite understood what the shady stuff was, or what we were supposed to be looking at, but hey, sure, I'll go along.

It was about midnight when we got to the house, set alone on the top of a grassy knoll, as houses are prone to do. DH wanted to be secretive, so he backed his car down a dirt path at the bottom of the hill, amidst rows of trees, until we couldn't go any further. We had the car on, but the lights off, and waited. And waited. Soon, a car appeared at the other end of the path, facing toward us, with its high-beams on.

Being manly men, we were screaming like girls at the very real possibility it was this crazy guy coming after us. The car sat there for several minutes; we couldn't go anywhere. Eventually, he backed out...we slowly pulled out of the dirt path and onto the main road, which wasn't that much wider. This is in back-country Pennsylvania, after all.

When we started driving away, we noticed the other car was behind us. It was on like Donkey Kong. DH, at that point a regular, reckless teenage driver, started flying down back roads as I kept checking behind us. We decided to go down a seldom used road, called Book Road. It is there where our fortunes turned for better or worse, depending on your view...

The thing about Book Road is it crosses over a creek, or, as some of us western Pa. people say, a "crick." There is a short, sharply-angled wooden bridge on the road. A week before this adventure took place, DH and I came down that road, DH driving, and hit the bridge going about 40 MPH. That just about wrecked his car- we got some air and I ripped his rearview mirror off trying to hold on for sweet, beautiful life.

Back to the chase. DH is cruising down the road, but just before he gets to the bridge, he slows down to about 25 mph, bouncing us over the bridge, before accelerating. At that point, I turned around to find the other car.

What I saw I'll never forget, either by memory or by lore. The other car's headlights, all I could make out in the darkness, rapidly approached us as the car reached the bridge. I saw the headlights crest toward the sky, as the car must have been going extremely fast by that point...

... And I never saw them hit the ground. Ever.

DH and I did check back the next day to see if there was a car. We saw nothing, and yet there should have been something. It was the Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman of car chases. The mystery remains unsolved, pending an investigation by Robert Stack.*

* That show used to freak me out, as did "Rescue 911" with Captain Kirk.

To discuss a Weekend Update, visually speaking, and Feliz Navidad to all

This is going to be another busy week on Wild ARS, and I'm not just saying that to create a false sense of hope (I wait until Christmas for that).
If you read this post yesterday (in order for this week to make sense, un-"mark all as read" and read it. P.S. Thanks), then you should know this week is going to be a "Getting to Know Me" week. I've challenged you to each write a similar post and let me know about it so I can put together something with all the links...If you already said "yes," you're the best thing since slap bracelets.

Later today, I'll have a post that recalls one of my favorite high school stories. It involves hijinx, a car chase and mayhem. No, seriously. Tuesday, Southern Belle has something special for us, as she asks me some intimate questions, which I will blame on the liberal "gotcha" media. I hope she doesn't ask me about Russia or what newspapers I read. Later this week, there's some other good stuff cooking, and I'm not just talking turkey.

All I can say is there will be an "appearance" by a certain famous rapper, and an awards presentation...

On to the Weekend Update. This time, the Update is mostly visual, as Capricorn and I celebrated our faux-holiday, Feliz Navidad 2008, on Friday. Really, it was an excuse to drink margaritas at noon, trim my Christmas tree well before Thanksgiving and eat Mexican food. Jealous?

First, a few mostly context-free things I heard/saw/experienced this weekend:
  • New Kids on the Block on the American Music Awards: I appreciated their singing of "Right Stuff." But I still have a hard time listening to them sing about hooking up at a club. Is that before or after they tuck their babies in for the night?
  • Murder Mystery Dinner: Props to the people at my church for putting on an excellent program- my group solved the mystery, too. Murder mysteries should be done every weekend. I even know some people I'd like to have murdered.
  • An empty table: At a busy restaurant on Saturday, Capricorn, myself and two friends stood beside an empty table for 30 minutes. Wouldn't you know it, that's the table they sat us at. Am I missing something here?
  • The Office: I'm catching Capricorn up on this show; we're in the midst of Season 2. We just watched the episode when Michael grills his foot. I, too, like the smell of freshly cooked bacon in the morning.
On to the visuals...

* Update on the Update: I would be remiss if I didn't tell you guys that, along with Feliz Navidad 2008, Capricorn and I also had our two-month anniversary this weekend. It seems like just yesterday I was at PetSmart with her.
